🌊 How to Build Resilience: You cannot catch waves on the beach

As an adventurer, I do not fight emotions. I accept them and become more resilient. As an adventurer, I do not fight emotions. I accept them and become more resilient.

Building resilience in the workplace is not about avoiding emotions, it's about accepting them, according to best selling book Sapiens

Have you ever tried to capture a wave?
It slips through your fingers, crashes onto the sand, and disappears.

That’s what it’s like to cling to happiness—futile and fleeting. And trying to push away suffering is just as pointless. Waves—like emotions—come and go whether we like it or not.

This powerful metaphor comes from Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind. The lesson is simple:
👉 Don’t grasp at happiness.
👉 Don’t repel suffering.
👉 Sit on the sand and let the waves wash over you—good or bad—without judgement.

When you stop fighting emotions, you make space for something far more valuable than happiness: contentment. Unlike happiness, contentment isn’t dependent on external factors. It’s a calm strength, a foundation that stays with you no matter what’s happening around you.

As an adventurer and motivational keynote speaker, this idea is central to my message on resilience. On expeditions, I know I’ll feel a full spectrum of emotions—fear, excitement, exhaustion, joy. Instead of wasting energy resisting them, I say to myself:

“I won’t be afraid of being afraid. I’ll accept it as a normal reaction in a scary situation. I’ll sit with the discomfort and focus on what I can control.”
In life and work, tough times are inevitable. Resilient people don’t fight emotions—they accept them, they get comfortable being uncomfortable, and they focus their energy where it counts.
By embracing this mindset, you’ll:
✅ Gain more control in uncertain situations
✅ Build unshakable resilience
✅ Experience lasting contentment
The waves will always come. You can’t stop them. But you can choose how you meet them. 🌊
