Amelia Earhart went missing trying to fly around the world
A US-pilot claims to have found Amelia Earhart's plane, sharing grainy sonar images on social media.
Tony Romeo, a pilot and former US air force intelligence officer, sold his South Carolina real estate investor business to fund his search for Earhart’s plane wreckage, and may have finally cracked the mystery.
Earhart disappeared in 1937 attempting to be the first woman to fly around the world, along with her navigator Fred Noonan. The pair went missing as they crossed the Pacific and the mystery has caused intense speculation ever since.

Earhart was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic and then the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. The accomplishments made her a celebrity.
Romeo shared on social media images that may be a plane, taken near Howland Island, in the middle of the Pacific.

“This is maybe the most exciting thing I’ll ever do in my life. I feel like a 10-year-old going on a treasure hunt,” he told the Wall Street Journal.
He is now trying to get clearer images to confirm the find.
This is not the first time someone has claimed to have found Earhart or her plane. In 2018, forensic analysis of bones found on a Pacific Island suggested they could have been Earhart's. Also that year, the international Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery produced sonar images of a plane, claiming it was Earhart's.
